DAWN newspaper (pakistan) reports:
SRINAGAR' june 6: protesters clashed with police on Saturday as a strike over the alleged rape and murder of two young muslim women paralysed occupied Kashmir for a sixth day.
The strike closed shops, schools, banks and offices in occupied Srinagar and other towns in the revolt-hit Kashmir Valley, Police and witnesses said.
Police fired tear gas and swung batons to disperse hundreds of protesters in Srinagar, who retaliated by hurling stones and bricks. "Ten protesters recived minor injuries," a poloce officer said, adding riot police were keeping a tight vigil over protesters elsewhere.
Police said they were investigating the deaths of the 17-year-old woman and her pregnant 22-year-old sister-in-law, whose bodies were found in a shallow stream last week.
Indian officials say preliminary investigations suggest drowning was the cause of death, but the families of the victims have accused the security forces of abducting, raping and killing the women.
A judicial probe has been ordered by chief minister Omar Abdullah, but it has failed to cool tempers.
Kashmir's Anit-india political leadership on Saturday remained under house arrest, which was imposed a week earlier.
Police and paramilitary forces have also sealed with barbed wire some neighbourhoods in Srinagar and southern Shopian town, where the two women's deaths were reported.
Earlier on Saturday, the main opposition People's Democratic Party held a protest march in Srinagar. It's leader, Mehbooba Mufti, called for the repeal of tough security laws that have given the security forces sweeping powers.
"Untill the atrocities end and the forces return to the barracks, people of Kashmir cannot lead a normal life'" she said.
Authorities have banned further demonstrations, in an attempt to curb the daily protests in which one person has been killed and over 300 injured so far.
An insurgency against Indian rule on Kashmir has seen dozens of thousands of people die over the past 20 years-AFP

INDIAN POLICE ACCUSED OF SUPPRESSING RAPE EVIDENCE.

NEW DELI: July 11: Four Indian police officials and a forensic expert have been accused of suppressing evidence in the rape and murder case of two Muslim women in occupied kashmir, a case that has triggered violent protests.
Abdur Rahim Rather, the law and finance minister in the region, said on Saterday that an indictment had been handed to a special investigation team, pending the likely arrest of the five suspects.
The charges followed a judicial probe into the case which concluded that the five not only failed to discharge their duties, but also destroyed important evidence.
The bodies of a 17-year-old girl and her 22-year-old sister-in-law were found in a stream on May 30.
Police initially said they drowned, but later acknowledged they had both been raped and murdered.
The case triggered wide-spead anti-India protests in the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley with demonstrators accusing Indian forces of being directly Involved in the case.
Police say they are still investigating the murders.- AFP
