QUOTE (zapatista @ Jan 27 2004, 05:16 PM)
I'm kind of with Dataika on this one.. well, cept for the name calling and crap.. no need for all that.. but, Ok.. Maybe father is a bad example.. Would you sacrifice yourself for the greater good?? I would. ermm.gif

to choose sacrificing urself for the greater good is something, and to give urself the choice to sacrifice someone else's life for the greater good, is something completely different. also, there's the issue of "what really is the greater good".

personally, im ok with the first, coz it's me i can choose for, but i cant decide for someone else to live or not for the greater good.

but that's just what i think zap smile.gif

offtopic.gif SORRY ABOUT THAT. I will post this to see what everyone thinks....

Ihad a teacher say something like this once.

Sure we have had a lot of bad things in this country's(Ameriacan) history but isn't that outweighted by all the good things that have came about? All the history books are filled with Amerian downfalls but shouldn't they make a bigger example of all the good this counrty has done.

Well to me this is the "do the ends justify the means" argument. I thought to myself-

Is he excusing slavery because it let this courty's economy sky rocket and allow it to do "greater goods?" Is this also excusing America's horrible record of raping South & Central America?

If you loose your humanity in the process can you still say "the ends justify the means?"

There is my two cents- for whatever good it will do ermm.gif

dunno.gif

I would punch someone for saying something like that right in their face.

Okay, not really, but damn I would sure FEEL like doing it.

yeah, I think that's a good example of what history and even geography teachers like to pass off on students.

If my dad explained to me that he was sacrificing him self to save four others I would never stand in he's way, because this would (although it would be hard for me personally) serve the better good. But I wouldn't let anybody (me, the government, the four people or anybody ells) force him or anybody ells to give up his god given right to live, no matter what the conditions. Sarah touched on this

QUOTE
The question "do the ends justify the means" tends to leave out the indisputible fact about these two. The ends are created by the means, the means completly effect the ends so that poor means basically mean a poor end.

This is true but people don't always see the true ends that are created through the means. For example if the people did decide to kill an unwilling innocent man to stop a murderer from killing four others, people would see this as saving three lives, but now you live in a *world* were if people believed if it was necessary they could and would kill you. This is much worse then losing three extra people because 'necessary' can be taken in many ways. (I.e. it was necessary to drop the most deadly of bombs on two major cities to end WW2) Again where do you draw the line?

*By the way I do relaize that we do live in this world*, but then again if we hadn't of taken the lives of so many germans and nazi's in WW2 what kind of world would we live in?

well ok if u guys believe that taking the life on one person to save the life of 3 ppl or whatever is justifiable...do u guys support the death penalty?

where do we draw the line, and really who draws the line?! bombing two cities is justifiable? in who's views? who okayed killing all those ppl? was it necessary? really? (by the way i am not mocking anyone...im asking serious questions)

i think there r quite a few frameworks that we seem to be working within and i think i am working within a different one than most of u guys...and that's probably why im finding it hard to comprehend the logic behind most arguments presented...

Don't you have anything better to post about than to call others "bitches" and sending nasty messages? First and foremost on this site is RESPECT. You don't dish it out...neither will we. Easy enough.
