I had parts of this song for ages, but it didn't really kick-start until I read a leftist article that, to paraphrase, was against progress in all its forms. In that context, progress meant corporate development, etc (that was the topic of the article). I felt there must be a clear, clear line drawn between corporate progress which damages society and the family while lining the pockets of the pillars of justice, and civil progress, which ideally moves closer to individual freedom, potential for happiness, and (religious or secular) salvation.

The former is the "progress" pushed by governments, seeking out padding for their wallets and those of their connections in D.C. and the corporate upper crust. I don't want the word 'progress' to bring up images of homes crashing down to make way for construction and CEOs taking checks, I want people to think of Du Bois and Subcomandante Marcos (ideally) or MLK and Rosa Parks (realistically). To make us support their version of progress, they follow the mantra "Ignorant people are easier to govern".

To quote Zack de la Rocha in one of my favorite speeches: "[A system] that wants you not to act. A system that would rather see all of you at that bar drinking beer filling your minds being put to sleep with beer or with drugs rather than acting against it and fighting that system". They want us to forget about individual rights. They want us to forget about civil rights. They want us to forget protests, marches, and the power that the people hold in their voices and fists. It makes me sick that people call ourselves an enlightened society, when we blindly seek our own happiness above the progress of society. We no longer protest loudly against those who we are dissatisfied with. We sit, complacent, with a distorted vision of progress, and without a single unified goal to fight for, as a people.
