how much does it cost though? I remember in Japan it costed around $1000 or even more.....
I've seen it done on my friend (and they're short ones too) and it looks pretty fly....
Moremi
It's varies but I've never heard of anything that expensive ohno.gif
The prices I hear are usually about $100-$200 to start a set and about $60-$100 for maintence.
Turd Ferguson
well, that's Japan, the land of the ever-rising prices! It's a beautiful country but it's so expensive for practically everything (unless you stay in the boonies, where things are slightly cheaper).

I was wondering, when you get your hair dreaded by a professional, does you hair then grow out in dreadlocks? because I can't see how that would be possible... oh yeah, and could somebody please post more pics of dreadlocks... I love looking at 'em smile2.gif

Ya miss my pom pom girl? Ok I'll put her back! With my quote I though there was a little much goin on so I took her out laugh.gif
I'v had my dreads for about 4 years. It's funny to hear people misunderstandings about dreads, like, their dirty or ya can't wash your hair.

No. The first time you visit a professional they will section your hair into squares and rows that are no smaller than the size of a pencil. They can be bigger than that if you want but you don't want them to be smaller than the size of a pencil. Then they will twist, roll, or comb these sections into your dreads. The end result will look like dreads (from a distance smile.gif ) but it will take several months before they actually mat into locks. You have to twist and palm roll your hair regularly. By doing so, you're tangling the hair and training it to lock. Eventually, you will get a bulb of matted hair and this is how the lock starts to grow. The new hair that grows from your scalp will have to go through the same process. You will have to twist and tighten it up. Or if you decide to freeform you will have to separate the hairs at the root and the new hairs will eventually lock on their own. If you don't do this they will start to stick together and it will be extremely painful pulling them apart.

People with naturally straight hair have additional techniques that I'm not too familiar with.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about (picture below). All those loose hairs on Zack's head wub.gif are what you have to tighten up regularly and bring into the locks.

i;d like to add something to the zack looks like bob convo. it's not the great, but it was funny at the time......(bare with me) my friend wanted a LOTR poster for her birthday, and so i went to the shop to get it and it was number 14, and i was looking for that and i grabbed it, then on the day she opens it and shows it to me, and from what i saw i was like "ohhh my God, what the hell is zack doing there?" and i thought that she decided to give me a Zack poster coz she loves me...(yep, we love each other) then i realised that i got her pster number 41 (bob marely) instead of 14 (lotr) but yeah moral of the story is, they look a like.

back to dreads, it's good to get all those info, zdlrfan, i asked a salon how much they'd do it for and she said round $500 (which would be round $250 US) so im gonna have to reconsider, coz that's too much money for me at the moment.

I was back at the store within minutes!
I got more Zack & Bob side by sides to but togather.
We could do a strand on just that! It's like reincarnation or somethin'
But until I get those ready. I love this guys lovely long dreads! embar.gif

embar.gif embar.gif what's up my friends.....

im very disappointed to have missed out on this conversation....
well, to quickly involve myself in this conv. i'll just say, i'm white, i had long straight hair, (about 30 cm)
then i got it dreaded.., by a mate, for $50 nz, so about 25 $us...
they're staying in pretty good, but im getting real tired keeping them looking good.
i regularly wash them with this weird shampoo-like stuff that my mate made.... wink.gif , it has some weird melted wax stuff in it apparently...,
anyway, i was quite careful not to get it wet at first, but now i dont care..
by the way, anyone can make dreads, u dont need to be a specialist or anything..
as long as u have some idea of what to do, the dreads will be good if u yourself take good care of them... zshy.gif mine arent at there best right now.... embar.gif embar.gif
so i got a mate to try and do them up, but i think ill get them done professionally soon.., half the jobs been done so....oh well,, i gotta go now..., ill check the boards again soon...,hopefully within a couple of days...
guerrillainmate
ps, indeed dreads aren't dirty, only if u dont clean them or look after them properly...
RATM-EZLN
I USE TO HAVE DREADLOCKS!!!!!...well..i was in the process...ah good times... cry.gif
anyways...you dont really have to go to a stupid salon or crap, its really cheap and easy, all you need is rubber bands, bees waxx, and one of those metal thingy haird combs thingys...... i did it my self and i think they looked pretty good... all i needed was time...(stupid school...)
Anyways, mom helped me with my hair, divide it or what ever, kinda like you would with braids...OH and you need special dread shampoo, or liquid hand soap works too, all you need is for it to clean your hair, no conditioner or any crap like that, it would be best if you washed your hair b-4 doing it, and have it dry. theres a website...i think its dreadhead.com...im not sure, but ill look it up, its really good it has videos and stuff...I MISS DREADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cry.gif
RATM-EZLN
i found the site!!!
http://www.dreadheadhq.com/ <--- very good, and its really cheap, the waxx is like 4 to 5 bucks and how expensive can rubberbands be?? anyways, thats a pretty good site has pics and stuff.

No, I found the site tongue.gif I posted this a couple of pages back.

I've been told that wax is bad for your hair. Most locticians don't use it anymore. I know people who used wax back in the day when it was the way to start your dreads and they got lots of build up and had to cut their locks off. But maybe it doesn't effect people with straight hair the way it effects people with curly hair. Don't know unsure.gif

That's true you may end up havin to cut your dreads off if ya use to much wax.
I think It's important for people to know that If ya think dreads will be less of a hassle then the hair you have now- that's not true. They are a lot of work, ya got to love them and play with them and treat them right, or they won't do ya right!
If your up to it though, GO FOR IT! tongue.gif

"Special super mega dread shampoo" unsure.gif

My sister and I spoke to about five locticians because we were going to get our hair locked together and they all said "no wax". I can give you their numbers if you want. My sisters loctician is from Jamaica and has worn locks most of her life. Most of the people I know with dreads just use a light oil to keep the scalp from getting dry, some use an aloe vera based gel. What I have been told is that the wax doesn't completely wash out and it builds up in the lock.

Well i never really did go to a ..loctrician.. but i did check alot of web sites, ask people and stuff, and i used waxx my self and everything was fine unstill the idiots at my sutpid school said i couldnt have my hair that way, but my hair was fine, and beleive me, i checked, and my head was VERY ITCHY!!!!!...that was the only problem..i miss dreads!!!! cry.gif

and that doesnt tell u something...? (wax doesnt wash off, and it builds up in the lock) ppl that use lots of wax and gel (dreads or no dreads) and leave it on for sometime do end up getting itchy head, now my understanding (thanks for the info zdlrfan) is, hair products staying in the hair for too long attract dirt, and dirt irritates the scalp.
Moremi
Exactly Sarah.

RATM, just curious, how long did you have those locs and how would you describe your hair texture before the locs?
guerrillainmate
wink.gif , i know that in NZ we have this thing where schools have to allow people to keep and wear dreads, even if its against their rules, something about cultural individuality... i dont know, but i know that my dean hates my dreads, and wanted me to cut them off.., that was about 4-5 months ago??... rolleyes.gif

btw, my dreads dont itch....... tongue.gif , someone had lice... wink.gif
laugh.gif

indeed dirt irritates the scalp, but then again, i think those harsh chemical sprays that make ppl's hair solid for a couple of hours might have that same effect...(even if theyre only in for half a day..)

personally i'd rather have bee wax in my hair than chemical spray, but i guess that comes down to personal preference.. smile.gif
RATM-EZLN
actually, my head wasnt itchy cuzz of the waxx, i didnt really use alot of waxx, the thing is i didnt really was my hair as much as i would when dread-less, and my scalp got dry, but for that i used this other thing that moisturizes(<--pretty sure its spelled wrong) my scalp, and i also prefer wax, ive never really tried any other thing, but wax worx for me. And i dont really remember how long i had my dreads...and if by texture you mean how my hair is?..then..its straight, on some areas it gets a lil curly/wavy.
realitrex
so whats the minimum price of dreads? cos i cant afford to pay much AT ALL!

Fake dreads? Is nothing sacred? ermm.gif
seditious beats
Dreads are dreads. They can still be sacred without the protocol of how one goes about getting dreading.
Moremi
Dreads are dreads? Not hardly. Most people who wear dreads wear them for spiritual reasons, to make a statement of pride, or consciousness and to be natural. I realize that a lot of people do it now for fashion and I don't necessarily have a problem with that. But synthetic dread locks are fake dread locks. There's nothing sacred about manufactured hair.
