This is only tangentially related, but if you're interested in Ali Farka Touré's work, he did an amazing album a year before he died with his protege, Toumani Diabate called In the Heart of the Moon. I highly recommend it if you're looking for music that manages to make you feel like you have an African sun on your face, even in the middle of winter. It's like vitamin-D flowing through your headphones.
