Munchable? laugh.gif She is very cute and I like the old buses too. What camera did you use? I can't afford the camera that I want. So I'm obsessing over what camera to buy. I will be in the U.S. for one week this month and if I make a mistake, it's not like I can turn around and take it back ermm.gif

Also I'm going to do a lot of outdoor photography. Are there any accessories that you've tested that are worth buying?

umm well i have two camera. i have the canon rebel xti its my back up and my main camera is a canon 40D. i love them both. the xti was my starter camera and now pretty much just sits in the bag unless i throw a lens on there and decide to take some other pics with a different lens. as for a camera to buy i favor canon. but you should really just go in and play with them yourself. i love canons glass. it to me seems alot clearer. but then again its all i have ever known. haven't done to much playing with nikons so i cant be sure. as for some accessories that i have bought would be flashes. i have a canon 430 ex flash and a alien bees studio flash/strobe and some remote triggers. and some light stands and umbrellas. some of these things can be had for very cheap. others are kinda expensive. it all depends on what your shooting. like you said you will be doing alot of out door stuff so you might just need the camera you will be relying on the ambient light outside to fill your shot.

if you have some flashes they can really help out with some dusk/sunset shots. i dont have people pics yet. well none i can post myself but i will soon. so these will have to help out. but like i said with flashes you can light up your foreground and keep the back ground perfect. here are some pics me and my buddy took for some customer car last night.

another thing i do recomend you get is some sort of post processing software. i use photoshop. post processing it can really help out your photography. and you can do some really nifty things with it.

This is what I get for only watching the new posts, what a cool thread! There's some amazing work in here, I'll add some of my own artistic attempts.

They're all taken with a Digital Rebel XTi with either a general-purpose lens or pro-sumer level telephoto. None of them have been retouched or color balanced in any way; I'm really paranoid about going overboard and hyper-colorizing photographs--I'd rather just take the photo right in the first place. Also, all the images are also links to the relevant Flickr page, so you can see them in higher resolutions.

I took this picture of a friend a few months ago at the first [Bread and Puppet] performance this summer. The bus she's resting against is the "Cheap Art Bus", a self-serve art gallery where you can pay $5-10 and get some beautiful woodblock posters. The downside is that it's a essentially a giant metal can with almost no ventilation, so it's 105+ degrees inside. If anyone here can make it up to Glover, VT (it's in the middle of nowhere), I highly recommend trying to catch B&P or visiting the museum. The performances start in July and end in August, I don't know about the museum.

This is the utility area underneath back porch of my grandparents' house in Lincoln, MA, taken in January. It's one of my favorite photographs, but it's also really maudlin for me; I took it the evening before my grandmother's memorial service. The series that this photo belongs in is a short chronicle of grandmotherly nostalgia for me, but is really beautiful taken by itself.

My family has as reunion every year on [Naushon Island] every October. This year, a fog descended ten minutes before the ferry arrived and this is a picture of that ferry. I've been visiting the island at the same time every year for about 20 years, and I've never seen fog like that before.

Elisium will enjoy this photo. Taken in Vinyard Haven on Marthas Vinyard last summer. I couldn't tell if it was a hobby project just beginning, or if it was unloved, or what.

Okay, last one. This is one of my favorite photos, I was on Naushon (as mentioned above) on a walk along the shore (unwittingly getting myself rediculously lost) and I stumbled upon a shipwreck. A real shipwreck of a 35+ foot fishing boat! The engine block had been rusting for a while, but it had these beautiful turquoise enamel fittings. I have a few others of the same engine and others from the wreck, but this one came out particularly good.

Lovely pictures Elisium and Sarielite!

And thanks for the info. Actually, I was thinking of accessories to protect the camera and help me shoot in difficult and sometimes extreme weather. But I will take your advice and play around with things even if I have to spend the entire day in the shop.

I prefer Canon and photoshop also. I want the EOS 5D ... but that's not gonna happen anytime soon ... maybe if I beg a relative to help me out grin.gif Still haven't decided what I'll buy but I will just take my time with it and hopefully I won't regret my decision.

you might want to look at the new canon 50D the 5D's will come down in price soon when the replacement comes out. as for protective gear. the higher you go in the DSLR line the better weather sealing you will get. i have taken some shots in the rain. i mean i didnt let my camera get soaked but letting it sprinkle on it and it was fine. i would like the 5D but i dont have about 3000 to spend on the camera. i mean i do but i have other stuff i would like to get before. alot its not so much the camera that takes great pictures its the photographer. i have seen some people take some amazing photos with just point and shoot cameras. i will say however that glass does make all the difference. like canon L glass does give you pictures that are sharp as a tack and great contrast.
but its all in what you want to take. if you have an questions im gonna pm you my number to my email to my phone so that way you can email me and i get it almost immediatly

Thanks elisium smile.gif I appreciate it and I will check out the 50D. Although I'm guessing it's going to be expensive because the 40D isn't cheap. I know the camera can't do the work for me. I have a few fully manual cameras and one compact digital camera. But the cameras are not meeting my needs. With the digital camera, shutter lag is a major problem and usually when I'm shooting in public I have to be very quick about it ... for safety and legal reasons. Also, I need to be able to change lenses and use filters. Film is also out of the question because I need to see my results immediately. I wouldn't feel comfortable turning my film over to anyone to develop and there's no way I can do it myself here. At least I haven't found a way. A DSLR seems like the best option because I get the manual functions, I can change lenses and use filters, view my photos immediately and there's no shutter lag. Normally I wouldn't take a camera out in the bad weather but I will need to do that sometimes.

I will definitely email you with questions. Thanks grin.gif

i totally understand what you mean cause thats why i bought my 40D. the 40D has dropped in price but only like 200 or so dollars. i mean its the camera i bought resently. lol i should have waited though cause i bought it and like 2 weeks later they announced the 50D. but none the less the 40 takes amazing pics. even if you get the 40D you will be more than happy with it im sure. but you should do your research like you said. the reasons you listed are all valid points to make the switch to digital. im not sure where you are right now and have to fear for your safety for taking a pic and for legal reasons? but i mean if your in stealth mode trying to take some pics then these things kinda attract attention. i mean where ever i go people are making comments about my gear. it can be done i mean if im out taking pics of random people i usually pretend to be a tourist. but at times you really cant do that. just be safe and know your limits which im sure you do. but im sure the 6.5 frames per second of the 40D or the 6.3 frames of the 50D will be fast enough to capture what you need. also if you need more info and side by side comparisons of certain cameras you should check out DPreview.com they can give you specs on a majority of the cameras out there DSLR or other wise. take a look around and ask a million questions. get exactly what you need i mean your spending good money. i hope im helping out and not sounding like some info snob. have a good day.

Aren't info snobs people who have the answers but won't help you out? That should be the definition anyway tongue.gif I think your photos are awesome. You're very knowledgeable and I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to answer questions. That's one of the reasons the thread is here.

I'm in West Africa. I've had a few minor but unpleasant experiences. I'm learning from them and always thinking of ways not to draw attention to myself. I'm sure I will be able to find a way to conceal the camera when I have to. Unfortunately, pretending to be a tourist only works in places that are used to seeing tourists ermm.gif This isn't exactly a tourist hot spot ... yet? Recently, a journalist (who was also a government employee) was beat up, on television, for filming outside of a government building. The building was visible from the public street where he was filming wacko.gif The country is still developing and people are still fighting for things like freedom of information and rights for journalists.

Anyway, I'm taking a look at the link you posted now and trying not to torture myself by looking at the cameras out of my price range tongue.gif Thank you smile.gif
