Has anyone read Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell.
I'm reading it at the moment and I would highly recommend it. It is basically about Orwell's experience of the Spanish Civil War. He went over to Spain to fight against the Fascists and was first placed in the POUM, a Spanish Marxist Party. The book also is helpful for explaining the political character of the Spanish Civil War. The Communists in this war were counter revolutionary because (unlike the POUM and the Anarchists) they did not want to continue a revolution. Orwell explains that this is due to relations with the USSR. The USSR relied on the capitalist economy of France, and France would not approve of a revolutionary neighbour in the form of Spain. I have not finished reading the book yet, but I am enjoying it so far. If anyone has read it, perhaps they could post their thoughts. -------------------- 'Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state' Chomsky

This might be slightly off topic because you're looking for opinions on the book and I haven't read it. But if you're interested in researching/learning more about the Spanish Civil War and the role of POUM, a great film to watch is Ken Loach's LAND AND FREEDOM. The main character is a young communist from England who goes to Spain to fight in the Civil War and ends up in a POUM detachment. The film also contains lefty criticism of Stalinism, and of its role in betraying the revolution in Spain.

All of our dreams, all of them, Flattened and crushed, as soon as they start taking shape. Ah baby, who do they take us for. Battered and bruised, constantly, relentlessly. Killing? Not their aim. Keeping us in an unimportant place is what this is about. Ah baby, who do they think we are. |
